Research connected to South Asia:

The department has been involved in a major project on ”Biofuel Conversion”, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, and its Heat Transfer and Thermal Power Laboratory, Chennai, India (represented by Professor Ajit Kumar Kolar, see his personal web page).
In November 2002 this project was given a Swedish Research Links (Asian–Swedish research partnership programme) grant on 600 000 SEK for three years (2003-05) by Sida and the Swedish Research Council. See the full list of South Asia related projects that were given grants.

Project description:
This Indo-Swedish co-operation project will investigate the volatiles released from a biofuel particle under conditions suitable for design of combustors and gasifiers. The rate of conversion of biofuel char will also be studied, where attention will be paid to fragmentation and attrition of the fuel material.
The experimental part of the work will be carried out in India using equipment installed during a previous Sida project. The two groups together will evaluate and model the phenomena based on a methodology that has been developed before, but which has been insufficiently investigated experimentally. The information produced in the project will serve as a support for modelling of fuel beds. The co-operation continues the previous Sida project, where both partners were involved. The work will be conducted by each of the partners supported by occasional meetings and e-mail communication. Workshops related to conversion of biomass will be organised.
