The Division of Operation and Maintenance Engineering was established in 2002. It works in close cooperation with other Research Groups active in field of Operation and Maintenance Engineering and industries locally and internationally. The main focus of the Operation and Maintenance Engineering group is to make contribution towards achieving higher availability, reliability, assets’ operability and world class productivity.
Research connected to South Asia
The Division is involved in research and teaching collaboration with the following universities in India and Nepal:
• Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, India. A premier institute of Mining Engineering in India. Collaboration has been going on for several years, and a member of the faculty from Luleå has been giving lecturers and seminars in Dhanbad. One doctoral student from ISM, has also joined the research group in Luleå.
• Indian Institue of Technology, Kharagpur, India. The Rector and a team of Professors including Uday kumar visited IIT Kharagpur in the beginning of 2008 and an MOU has been signed between LTU and IIT for collaborative work in the area of Operation and maintenance engineering amongst others.
• Benaras Hindu University, India. The likely area of collaboration is in the field of mining, reliability and productivity enhancement through application of maintenance engineering techniques
• Kathmandu University, Nepal. Plans for collaboration in the field of reliability and enhanced productivity, a new area for the Nepalese where and the division of Operation and Maintenance Engineering of Lulea University of Technology can actively support with expertise.
Professor Uday Kumar (photo on the right) obtained his B. Tech from BHU, India during the year 1979. After workingfor 6 years in Indian mining industries, he joined the postgraduate program of Luleå University of Technology, Sweden in 1986 and obtained a PhD degree in field of Reliability and Maintenance during 1990. He was professor and Head of the Division at Stavanger University, Norway 1998-2000.
In July 2002, he has taken up the position as a Professor of the division. Besides he is also Director of Luleå Railway Research Center at Luleå University, and Coordinator for the Research School on “Business and Technology Network”, at Luleå University of Technology.
His research interests are Equipment maintenance, maintenance strategy, reliability and maintainability analysis, Product support Life Cycle Costing, Risk analysis, System analysis, Maintenance performance measurements etc. He is also member of the editorial boards and reviewer for many international journals. He has published more than 100 reports and papers in International Journals and Conference proceedings. He is also the Director of Centre for Maintenance and Industrial Services (C-MIS) since 2007.
Senior Lecturer Aditya Parida (photo on the left) is doing research work on Design and development of performance measurement system for the service and maintenance organizations. Before joining Luleå University of Technology he develped a career teaching in the fields of Operation and Maintenance Engineering, Production Management and Material Management at Indian universities, at NIILM Center for Management studies, New Delhi; Birla Institute Management and Technology, New Delhi; Institute of Management Technology, Patna; Institute of Integrated Learning in Management, New Delhi; and Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur; prior to that, Mr. Parida has been working for the Indian Army as Maintenance Engineer (Lt-Col and Director) 1973–1995.
