South Asia related research at the department

Dr. Carina Ursing is a Senior Diabetologist Carina Ursing has initiated a collaboration  project between Karolinska Institutet and Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences Deemed University (PIMS) in Loni, Maharashtra, India.  A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on collaboration regarding rural diabetic research studies in India was signed in February 2010.
Dr. Ursing visited Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences at Loni in August 2009 on an Erasmus Mundus Action 2 scholarship programme (more information about the programme). As part of her academic and research pursuit, she interacted with a number of faculty members of PIMS, rural doctors in the area and visited PIMS University Hospital, Rural Health Centres, Mobile Medical Units and “Out-reach” Diagnostic Camps to design some collaborative research studies.
As a result of this, Dr. Ursing and Dr. M.G. Takwale, Vice Chancellor of PIMS, signed the MoU to undertake the following collaborative research projects at Centre for Social Medicine and Rural Medical College of PIMS University in the field of diabetes mellitus.

1. A Prospective Randomized Cross-sectional Study of Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus in Rural Population in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra

This study has been launched at Centre for Social Medicine of PIMS University being Dr. Carina Ursing, KI, Sweden as Principal Investigator and Prof. K.V. Somasundaram, Director for the Centre for Social Medicine at PIMS; Prof. Sanjeev Kulkarni; and Prof. Hemant Pawar as co-investigators, in March 2011.  Following the research methodology of this study, till September 2011, as many as 362 people, who were attending the eight general diagnostic camps conducted in rural areas of Ahmednagar district, were selected randomly for collecting random blood sample and other vital data like age, sex, height, weight and blood pressure.

2. Study of Prevalence Ocular Manifestations in individuals with Diabetic Mellitus in Rural Population of Maharashtra

This study was launched at the Rural Medical College Hospital in Loni on 14th November 2011, on the eve of World Diabetes Day, by organizing a Diabetes Patient Treatment Camp. Following the Research methodology, diabetes patients identified by Rural Health Centres (RHCs), Mobile Clinics (MCs) of PIMS-DU, Out-reach Camps conducted under Study No. 1, and general practitioners, specialists in Loni area will be invited for this camp for treatment. The research team includes Dr. Carina Ursing, KI, Sweden as Principal Investigator and Dr. Surekha Bangal, Prof.  & Head, Dept. of Ophtalmology, Rural Medical College, & Prof. K.V. Somasundaram, Director, Centre for Social Medicine, PIMS University as co-investigators.

Dr. Carina Ursing is visiting PIMS on 23rd November 2011 to take part in the ongoing research studies and to hold future possibilities of further strengthening of the studies.
