Research connected to South Asia

Birgitta Agerberth, since 2007 Professor in Medical Microbial Pathogenesis, headed a research group within the Division of Physiological Chemistry I. A central issue in Birgitta Agerberth’s research is how the inherited immune defence manages to keep us healthy despite all the bacteria around us. More precisely, it revolved around the human antimicrobial peptide LL-37 and how it works and is regulated, with the current focus on shigella.

In November 2009, Prof. Agerberth was awarded SEK 900 000 as a three-years research grant (2010–12) from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida, for a a new project entitled ”Clinical trial of oral phenyl butyrate and vitamin D adjunctive therapy in pulmonary tuberculosis in Bangladesh: a pilot study”.
