From 1 January 2006 the two departments of Biosciences and Medical Nutrition form the new Department of Biosciences and Nutrition.
The department performs research and education in areas of medical science. These include signal transduction and gene regulation, structural biology and bio-organic chemistry, human genetics and functional genomics, cellular virology and environmental toxicology. The department offers an international working environment and consists of approximately 400 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel from many different countries. Furthermore, most research projects are conducted in the context of national and international networks. For example, the EU CASCADE network that studies endocrine disrupters is coordinated from the department.
The department is organised into four divisions, the Division of Medical Nutrition, the Center for Biotechnology, the Center for Nutrition and Toxicology and the Center for Structural Biochemistry. The department participates in undergraduate and postgraduate education programs at Karolinska Institutet, Södertörns Högskola and Stockholm University. The department has activities related to science and society within the CASCADE framework.
In November 2004 Lena Hammar received SEK 650 000 as a three year grant (2005-07) from the Swedish Research Links programme (funded by Sida and the Swedish Research Council) for an India related project titled ”Structure-function relationship in hepatitis virus E infection”. More information on the Swedish Research Links grants 2004.
The project is carried out in collaboration with researchers at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, ICGEB, in New Delhi.
