Solid Mechanics was the first division established at LTH. The first head of the division, Bertam Broberg, was also the first professor at LTH and even dean. He was instrumental in the establishment of the LTH campus. Research is carried out within the fields of constitutive modeling, computational mechanics, fracture mechanics and biomechanics. Much of this research is carried out in close cooperation with leading universities in USA, Germany, Israel and India.
Research and collaboration related to South Asia
Prof. Per Ståhle is also affiliated to the Research group on Material Science and Applied Mathematics at the School of Technology, Malmö University. Since 2005, he has been involved in collaborative research on Material Science with Professor Srikumar Banerjee and Professor R. N. Singh from the Mechanical Metallurgy Section, Materials Group, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai, India. They have written around 10 scientific articles together.
Prof. Bannerjee is currently serving as Chairman for the Indian Atomic Energy Commission. He shares research interests with Prof. Ståhle.
Prof. Singh was a Marie Curie scholarship holder, spending time in Sweden during the period 2006-07 and in the summer 2010, he again came to Lund University as a scholarship holder in the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 Indo-European mobilty programme administered by Lund University (more information).
P. Venkateswara Rao has been an Indian PhD candidate at the department.
